Coach not worried about Romo
The Sports Xchange reports Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said there are no worries about quarterback Tony Romo and the offense despite a subpar preseason. Romo completed 26 of 46 passes for 287 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and a 64.3 passer rating in four preseason games. He also took five sacks. The first-team offense scored just one touchdown on 12 possessions in four games and that came after an 80-yard fumble return by Barry Church. "I see our quarterback coming on, and I think he's going to be ready," coach Wade Phillips said. "I don't know that Tony tore it up last year in the preseason, but he threw for 353 yards in the first (regular-season) game."

Haynesworth plays entire game
In the final preseason game - a game in which 31 of his teammates didn't even suit up - Haynesworth went from start to finish in the Washington Redskins' 20-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night. The defensive lineman with the $100 million contract played 49 of 55 snaps on defense and was still on the field in the fourth quarter, huddling with third-stringers and no-hopers. Asked to explain the unusual workload for a player expected to be a major contributor, Shanahan sang a familiar refrain. "He's got to get in football shape," Shanahan said. "For the same reasons we've talked about. We got to get him some playing time so he can get back in football shape. I got to take a look at the film to tell you exactly how he played, but that's one of the reasons he's playing defensive end and nose tackle positions. We've got to get him as good as he can possibly be and in football shape. There's only one way to do it and that's to practice and play."

Lewis cut by Pats
The New England Patriots have released defensive lineman Damione Lewis. Lewis, a first-round draft pick by the St. Louis Rams in 2001, was signed as a free agent on April 10 after spending the past four seasons with the Carolina Panthers. He had been expected to provide depth after defensive end Jarvis Green left as a free agent for the Denver Broncos.

Nicks puts injuries behind him
The Sports Xchange reports Giants WR Hakeem Nicks, who last year capped his rookie season with 47 receptions for 790 yards and six touchdowns, didn't quite get off to the start he envisioned for himself due to injuries to his toe and knee that limited his chances in the spring. However, with the injuries now behind him, Nicks is looking forward to building on the foundation he put in place that also saw him post a team-leading 16.8 yards-per-catch. "I feel like I'm coming back," said Nicks, who spent some time before training camp working with QB Eli Manning at the Manning Family's Passing Academy in New Orleans, La. "I'm definitely working hard at it. It's going to take time, and it's a long season."

Rams not naming top QB yet
Sam Bradford will have to wait a few days to learn if he'll start the St. Louis Rams' opener. Head coach Steve Spagnuolo said Friday that he'd make a decision in the next two or three days on whether Bradford or veteran A.J. Feeley would start in Week 1 against the Cardinals. In his two starts, Bradford was 21 for 28 for 257 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. After the game, he wasn't campaigning for the job. "If he says that, then I'll handle it like I know I can," Bradford said. "But until then, I'm just going to show up, do what I can and hopefully one day I will be the starter of this team."

V-Jack trade coming?
With the Chargers acquiring WR Patrick Crayton from the Cowboys and continuing reports out of Seattle suggesting the team will part ways with T.J. Houshmandzadeh, signs are coming together that Vincent Jackson will be traded from San Diego within the next 36 hours. Jackson is unhappy with his contract situation with the Chargers (he's currently an unsigned restricted free agent) and though he hasn't asked to be traded, the team doesn't see a long-term resolution and might otherwise opt to deal him. Seattle seems to be the most logical landing spot at this point, particularly because of the interest they've shown in him.

Chargers acquire WR Crayton
The Cowboys have traded WR Patrick Crayton to the Chargers for a seventh-round pick according to ESPN. Crayton was upset with his role with the Cowboys this summer after the team drafted Dez Bryant, but the veteran ultimately played through his disappointment. He only caught three passes for 24 yards with Dallas this preseason and did not record any offensive stats in their final three contests. Crayton has averaged over 15 yards per catch over his last two seasons but has never had more than 700 yards in a season.

Ivory makes team, should be OK
The agent for Saints RB Ladell Betts told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that his client has been released. That's a sign that the injury to RB Chris Ivory (knee) in Thursday's preseason game vs. the Titans wasn't that serious. Head coach Sean Payton had no update on Friday. It also means Ivory has nailed down the backup job behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush.
